A wonderful time on the wild Whidbey Island.

Located about 2 hours north of Seattle it is the largest Island of Washington state. It’s a beautiful place and there is a way to spend a wonderful time on the wild Whidbey Island.

You can easily access it by car if you come from Seattle, you would drive to Mukilteo to take the ferry. It’s easy to get to, the ferries are commuting every 30 min. The cruise is on average 20 min. You would then arrive in Clinton, one of the biggest cities on the island.

When I went there with my husband, we stayed in a lovely house in the middle of the forest. Between Langley and Beverly Beach with an incredible view of the lake. It was so authentic and peaceful.

The view from the house

On our first day, we took a walk around Langley, a small and charming town with some cute shops, a winery, and the whale center. It gives interesting information about the orcas that commute in the area. We also visited the Whidbey distillery that I would highly recommend. Even if you are not into whiskey. They do a selection of fruity spirits that can be used in cocktails and it’s worth a try. If you go to the distillery, you will get a tour and explanation of their process and a tasting.

We had dinner in Langley in a restaurant call Prima bistro with a view on the lake. The food and staff were great. https://primabistro.com/

The second day, as we were staying in the south of the Island, we drove up to Fort Casey. The drive to get there is nice, we stopped a couple of times. The area is so wild and peaceful, you can go for short or long hikes on the way.

Fort Casey

There are different options there if you are only spending one night, you can go straight from Fort Casey to the top without stopping. It’s about 1h30 to get from the bottom to the top of the island. But if you have two nights you can take more time. We spent two nights on the island, and we hiked around South Whidbey State park before exploring Fort Casey where we also had a bite to eat. The lighthouse is so charming we were there in January and there was almost nobody around. The place was surrounded by dears making the place even wilder.

Honeymoon Lake

The last day on the island is the one you should spend at the very top of the deception pass. The drive to get to the top is lovely, you can stop for lunch before crossing there are a few restaurants around. Then I would advise parking right before the bridge, there is parking there if it’s not too busy, you should find a spot. From there, you can walk down along the water, the view is spectacular, and the walk is easy. You can extend it as much as you want. Then, of course, you should cross the bridge, it is very impressive, if you are a bit scared of the heights maybe avoid it but if you are not it’s worth it. On the other side, you also can walk along the water if you fancy it.

From there you will be leaving Whidbey. You can drive down to Seattle it takes about 1h30 if the traffic is clear. This island is worth it, we had a wonderful time there and felt far from the rest of the world. We experienced it in winter which made it look super wild but summer is amazing too just a bit crowded as it is a popular destination.
